This award winning Chili Crock Pot Recipe comes from Tom C of the United States.
He has named it Boomerang Chili - which is an intriguing name. Here is his story about how he created this Crock Pot Chili Recipe; how it won an award; and how it got it's name.
How Boomerang Chili came into Being!
Two years ago, the local community college where I teach chemistry, had a
faculty, staff chili competition. I started 8 weeks ahead with a series of
experiments to make what I thought was the perfect chili. I started with a
favorite commercial recipe that we had eaten for years called Lipton campfire
bean dinner which was a quick (30 min.) and easy fix using Lipton onion soup
mix and Hunts chili sauce along with beans and hamburger.
For 8 weeks I tried a new combination of ingredients each weekend and sometimes in the middle of the week. I decided the only way to get the combination of flavors was to cook in a Crockpot.
Of course being a chemist, I used an organized approach only changing or adding one ingredient at a time. At the end of that 8 weeks, I had what I thought was the best chili I had ever tasted. (Doesn't everyone think that of their chili). It must have been pretty good as I won best chili based on taste, consistency and appearance. They wanted to give me presentation but decided to spread it around.
The name? Several years ago I started a new hobby of making
and throwing boomerangs and everything must be connected in someway to
boomerangs, therefore the name Boomerang Chili. I painted 2 boomerangs with
chilies and called them my "Chili-rangs". They were used in my presentation
of the chili at the competition.
