Cooking Ground Beef in the Crock Pot
|
|
|
This tip on Cooking Ground Beef in the Crock Pot comes from Terri. She makes it this way for her family all the time.
Please note that some health officals don't think ground beef should be cooked in the crock pot - as they don't think it gets hot enough quickly enough. You be your own judge

Browning Ground Beef or Bulk Sausage
I use my 3-4 quart crock pots for this as it does 2lbs of meat nicely.
Pour about 2-3 Tblsp of olive oil in the bottom of crock, (I have also been in a hurry and forgotten the olive oil and it turned out just fine).
Then put the meat in the crock pot (if using very lean meat add about 1/2 cup or so of water).
Let cook on high for 2 hours then break up the meat into some smaller chunks (you don't have to be too fussy about this, its very easy).
Then turn down to low for about 4 more hours.
I then take a large dinner plate and cover it with a few paper towels and using a slotted spoon scoop up a couple of spoonfuls of the meat and put it on the plate.
Using a metal spatula (we call them flippers lol) gently break the meat up into as tiny of chunks as you like it. I like it very fine. The meat is so tender it breaks down easily.
Put the meat into another container and replace the paper towels on the plate and repeat until the meat is all broken up and drained. For 2 pounds of meat I can do this in less than 10 minutes.
You can then use the cooked burger or sausage in your favorite recipe.
