Dark Stout Autumn Fruit Ham Steaks Recipe
|
|
|
This is a very unique recipe that Neil and I are excited to try. It sounds so rich and good. We've decided to make it this weekend.
Well we did cook this one - and Neil loved it so much he awarded it our October 2008 Crock Pot Recipe Contest Winner.
It has a fairly strong 'stout' flavor so pick one you like. If your not a beer drinker (like me) you may find it a bit strong.
And here is the reply from Donna when she won.
Thank you so much! I'm very happy.
"Come to the light, Lisa" Beer is good! haha....
Thanks so much. Donna.

Dark Stout Autumn Fruit Ham Steaks Recipe
One 21-ounce can of apple pie filling
1/3 cup dried dates, chopped large
¼ cup fresh squeezed orange juice
¼ cup dark autumn stout or beer
Pinch of ground allspice
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon whole mustard seeds
2 pounds of a thick fully cooked ham steak cut into 2 inch thick strips
1. In a mixing bowl stir together pie filling, dates, orange juice, stout, allspice, chili powder and mustard seeds. Stir mixture together well.
2. Layer ham strips and fruit in a small crock pot alternating layers ending with the fruit.
3. Cook, covered, on low heat 4 to 5 hours until steamy and heated throughout so all flavors can infuse.
For a complete dinner serve ham pieces with a favorite winter squash side dish, mashed potatoes, mugs of stout and assorted mustards.
I also serve it with biscuits and cornbread.
